Despite nominally being more powerful and experienced than the Odds, the Protectors arrived on the scene late compared to the Odds when the alien Cosmic Solution robot threatened New York City, and refused to listen to the Odds' information about how the robot seemed to work. They attacked it at full power, not realising it simply absorbed the energy and used it to grow stronger. After they saw that attacking had made the robot grow, the Protectors decided that the winning strategy must somehow be to do the “opposite”: that is, nothing at all. They were immediately reduced to ash by the now-gigantic Solution before the eyes of the Odds. In the end, the Solution agreed to leave the Earth of its own accord after being called off by another agent of the Cosmic Order. (COMIC: Journey Out Of Misery)

Puzzlingly, their line-up appeared identical to the originals despite all the heroes' very public death. Kate Kerrigan, the Protectors' long-time press secretary, claimed that “all questions [would] be answered in due time”. (COMIC: Epilogue to Destruction)
