Lord Grallyx was a reptilian demon, multiple versions of whom squared off against various incarnations of Jenny Everywhere. Grallyx was not generally an interdimensionally-aware being, but some versions of him gained shifting abilities, knowledge of Jenny, or both.

Description

Physical appearance

Lord Grallyx usually appeared as an alligator-like demon, with six eyes, four arms, two tails, and “far too many teeth for Jenny [Everywhere]’s liking”. As Grand High Lord, Grallyx wore a flaming crown that hovered a few inches above his head, although he had lost it by the time Jenny imprisoned him. (PROSE: Jenny Everywhere and the Lord of Hell)

Powers & abilities

Lord Grallyx was an individually very powerful Demon; he had no interest in making demonic pacts with mortals, as he did not actually need to accrue his power. If released from Hell, he suggested that he had the power to lay waste to the entire Earth himself.

In addition to whatever abilities he might have earlier possessed, one version of Grallyx was able to use his magic to copy Jenny Everywhere's shifting powers after repeated first-hand exposure to them — although he was unable to make much of use of them before being imprisoned. (PROSE: Jenny Everywhere and the Lord of Hell) Another Grallyx seemed to inherently have the ability to travel between dimensions, being a higher-dimensional being himself, who found three dimensions limiting. He could create physical forms for himself at will, including his trademark many-limbed reptilian look, which was capable of breathing fire. (PROSE: Birds and Snakes)

Biography

Summoned by Jenny and Laura

Lord Grallyx was summoned to Earth from the Ratreyfian Underworld by Laura Drake using an old demonology book, with the intent of making a deal with him to help Laura pass a vital history exam she needed to get into the advanced science class at her school. As soon as he materialised, Grallyx explained that he intended to simply take over the world, having no need of making deals.

Jenny Everywhere had been helping Laura, however, and with another, more experienced Jenny taking temporary control of her body, she shifted Grallyx away from his universe and transported him rapidly through several other dimensions. Every time, Grallyx was temporarily inserted into the history and fabric of that world's Jenny's life, changing as needed — such as turning into a Dragon in the world of a Knight Jenny or a terrifying cosmic singularity called ‘GRALL-X’ in a space-soldier Jenny's dimension. Every time, Grallyx eventually realised who he really was. Through trial and error, he eventually learned how to replicate shifting with his own demonic power.

However, before he could use this to his advantage, Jenny finally found a dimension whose rules allowed Grallyx to be defeated: in this world, they were both living drawings, enabling Jenny to draw shift-preventing chains around Grallyx, keeping him trapped as a drawing. When she returned herself and him to the dimension they'd started from, Grallyx was now genuinely trapped as an illustration in the very demonology book Laura had used to summon him. (PROSE: Jenny Everywhere and the Lord of Hell)

On April Fools' Day, Lord Grallyx realised he could exploit the Rule of Funny to escape the demonology book in which Jenny had imprisoned him by editing his own page on the Jenny Everywhere Wiki.

He then located Jenny, who had been participating in a pie-baking contest in one universe in the Ninety-Third Empire of Sagittarius. When he explained to her how he had escaped, she pulled out her own lap-top and edited back to his prison. In turn, Grallyx edited her page to trap her in the book with him. However, she escaped with relative ease by simply shifting out, with no further editing required. Raging, Grallyx vandalised the Wiki on a much greater scale, making himself out to be the main character instead of Jenny.

To further incapacitate her, he also edited her page to make her copyrighted (with him as the IP owner), leading to robots belonging to the Interdimensional Copyright Office arriving in a copyright-ship to sequester her. However, she managed to stun Grallyx long enough to edit herself back into the public domain. In an even greater feat of Wiki vandalism, he successfully edited the summary of every Jenny Everywhere story on the Wiki to be about him, cementing himself as the “supreme crosser-over of the Omniverse”. However, Jenny was unmoved, noting that by the very same fourth-wall-leaning principles he was exploiting, an April Fools' Day story simply couldn't alter the status quo of reality to this extent, and one way or another things would be back to normal the next day. In the Collapsed Cosmos

In the Collapsed Cosmos, Jenny Everywhere would later reminisce with Glendalf about fighting Lord Grallyx on “the astral plane”. (PROSE: The Hermetic Garbage of Jenny Everywhere)

Laura's plush toy

In one universe, Grallyx existed in the form of a plush toy. His extra number of arms and eyes was the result of a factory error, having originally been meant to be a regular toy alligator. He was salvaged by a woman who later became Laura Drake's grandmother. When she was two, Laura was gifted the plush toy by her grandmother. She decided to name it “Grawlix”, after what she had heard was the name of the scribbles replacing dirty words in comics like Asterix, which her grandmother liked to read to her. However, because the precocious but still-young Laura couldn't spell, it came out as “Grallyx”, which stuck. She later took the Grallyx plush toy with her to the Neptunian Orbital University, continuing to talk to him while she worked on her physics projects. Jenny noticed the toy when she met Laura for the first time, and, to Laura's relief, did not make fun of her, instead finding the toy cute and admiring its uniqueness. Summoned to Mystepolia

See main article: Lord Grallyx (The Demon and the Butterfly)

One version of Grallyx was an ancient Salamander Lord who was summoned to Mystepolia in the 775th Universe by the same failed experiment of Laura Drake's which gave the local Jenny her powers. (COMIC: The Demon and the Butterfly)

In Slough

One version of Grallyx was summoned to Jenny Cornelius's home universe in the 1960s, but was not apparently native to it, with a local demon describing him as not being one of “his lot”. This Grallyx was a higher-dimensional being, who crafted his three-dimensional “multi-armed alligator” form, apparently designing it more to be impressive than with practicality in mind. He chose to emerge in Slough, knowing that it was as far as one could get from a place where supernatural happenings would be expected. Going by “the Tenth Lord Grell”, he built up a cult and convinced them to summon him physically. Upon emerging, he killed the summoners, but was trapped in the circle for as long as the candles around it burned. He was all set to simply wait it out, and then conquer the world, but multiple parties managed to get wind of the cult of the Tenth Lord Grell, including the local demon and the Intelligence Taskforce. The former tried to send his bookseller friend to deal with it, and, failing to find him in time, instead had to send Jenny Cornelius; meanwhile, the Taskforce sent Laura Drake. Jenny, calling on her full powers, banished Grallyx before he could free himself, though not before Grallyx breathed gouts of fire at her in an effort to kill her, setting fire to the building around them instead. A child's drawing

As drawn by Jenny E. (age 7). (PROSE: Games in the Woods)

In another world, a young Jenny showed Laura Drake drawings of her imaginary friends, including one “Lord Gralecks” [sic]. These beings were actually all villains that she faced in shifting misadventures, but, with no frame of reference, Jenny took onboard adults' notion that she simply had a very active imagination as expressed whenever she tried to tell them about it. Jenny told Laura that she suspected “Gralecks” of being a trickster. (PROSE: Games in the Woods)

Imprisoned in deep space

In yet another universe, Grallyx was imprisoned "far out in the Oort Cloud, thousands of times farther from the sun than Earth’s warm lands" after his defeat by the Band of the Scarlet Scarf. Once he had a visitor who came asking about "The Everywhere" but he got no sympathy for his plight or being surrounded by robots. (PROSE: How Jenny First Met...)

In the Parallax Universe, Jenny Everywhere mentioned Grallyx to Kim as an example of genuinely dangerous foes other Jennies had faced, alongside Cardinal Dracula, when assuring Kim that dealing with the Puritan Streaker and La Frotteuse would be a walk in the park in comparison. Kim had never heard of either, and Jenny promised to tell her about them later. (PROSE: Return of the Puritan Streaker)

Behind the scenes

Lord Grallyx was created in 2020 by Lupan Evezan for a Jenny Everywhere Day prose story, Jenny Everywhere and the Lord of Hell, and released thereupon in the public domain under similar conditions to Jenny Everywhere herself:

The character of Lord Grallyx is available for use by anyone, with only one condition. This paragraph must be included in any publication involving Lord Grallyx in order that others may use this property as they wish. All rights reversed.
Lupan Evezan

Grallyx began appearing in works by other authors shortly thereafter.
