Jenny Somewhere

From Jenny Everywhere Wiki

The name of “Jenny Somewhere” was used by several shifters in the Multiverse who were “flawed” incarnations of Jenny Everywhere with less control of their shifting powers, often originating as imperfect clones of the real deal. They did not share in the Jenny Everywhere mental network.

Description

Physical appearance

Most versions of Jenny Somewhere shared Jenny Everywhere's goggles, but usually wore them around their necks rather than on their heads. At least two Somewheres shared a broad physical appearance which was interestingly distinct from the mainline Jenny Everywhere look; they had a more European complexion, and wore blue jeans a gray jacket with golden buttons worn over a short green top exposing her midriff, with no scarf. Their hair was a less intense black than Jenny's, appearing almost gray despite Jenny's apparent youth. They had a somewhat large, round nose. (COMIC: The Apple of Discord, Going Everywhere and Nowhere)

Other Somewheres, however, were close enough clones of their counterpart Everywhere that they could switch places convincingly. (PROSE: Jenny Everywhere and the Very Normal Story) Somewhere was sometimes associated with a green colour. (COMIC: Is it gay to have a crush on the person you are cloned from)

Personality

Ultimately being variations of Jenny Everywhere, Jenny Somewheres were usually heroic and helpful, though somewhat more jaded and cautious in their multiversal travels than ordinary Shifters, due to their more hazardous mode of travel (PROSE: The Disappearance of Jenny Everywhere) which “understandably made her [more] reluctant to use [her powers]” than Everywhere. Though still adventurous, she was less upbeat and confident than her “original”. Also like Everywhere, she was pansexual. (PROSE: Jenny Everywhere and the Very Normal Story)

Powers & abilities

The typical Jenny Somewhere was a shifter, with abilities reflecting those of a “normal” Jenny Everywhere, minus the ability to aim. At least one found it easier to broadly aim if she started from the Void rather than going directly from one world to the next, but even that was a risky process. (PROSE: The Disappearance of Jenny Everywhere) At least some versions of Somewhere could tap into a mental network of their other selves, like Jenny Everywhere's, but, as with her physical shifting, could not accurately aim for which Somewhere's knowledge she wanted. (PROSE: Jenny Everywhere and the Very Normal Story)

Being almost, but not quite, a version of Jenny Everywhere, a Jenny Somewhere could just barely reach the outer fringes of the Infinite — provided other shifters helped her with the aiming process — but she could not quite enter it on her own. (PROSE: The Disappearance of Jenny Everywhere)

Biography

Shifting to the Infinite

One version of Jenny Somewhere was a failed clone of Jenny Everywhere. After all “true” versions of Jenny Everywhere seemed to disappear from the Multiverse overnight, this Somewhere was left behind and was roped by Hakhe and Jenny Anywhere into helping them to shift into the Infinite to see if they could find any remaining Everywheres. They eventually managed to enter the Infinite with the additional help of Laura Drake, but even there, they did not find any version of Jenny, though they did meet up with Michael Wherever and the Illumination, who'd had the same idea.

They then headed to a seaside town which had been a particularly favoured haunt of Jenny's to reflect and mourn her. The city was attacked by the Fallen One, a vengeful accumulation of foes Jenny had defeated over the years; the group of her friends managed to drive it back in Jenny's name, until finally Jenny herself returned to reality to finish the job, sheepishly explaining the entirely non-deadly reasons for her temporary absence. The Shifters partied in celebration. (PROSE: The Disappearance of Jenny Everywhere)

Trapped in a “Very Normal” world

See main article: Jenny Somewhere (Is it gay to have a crush on the person you are cloned from)

One universe's Jenny Somewhere was a failed clone of Jenny Everywhere. (PROSE: Jenny Everywhere and the Very Normal Story, COMIC: Is it gay to have a crush on the person you are cloned from) She looked physically identical to Everywhere, and wore a variant of her typical outfit — including a black skirt, a dark green short-sleeved shirt, a scarf, and goggles. Like the Jenny Everywhere she had been cloned from, she went barefoot. However, she had put on some weight relative to her template, and her outfit was green and had a leaf motif, (COMIC: Is it gay to have a crush on the person you are cloned from) instead of the original's purple flower-motif. (COMIC: That Feeling When Your Antagonist Is Gay For You)

As a Crewmate

See main article: Jenny Somewhere (Jenny Nowhere Is Sus, She's The Impostor!)

In one universe, Jenny Somewhere was a Crewmate in a futuristic, spacesuit-wearing crew; her spacesuit was yellow, with a sun motif. Also in the crew were Jenny Everywhere and Jenny Nowhere. Unbeknownst to Everywhere and Somewhere, however, Nowhere was actually a murderous Impostor. After a body was found near some vents, the two real Crewmates began investigating, deducing that the Impostor must be someone from electric; however, returning to the scene of the crime, they seemed unaware that Nowhere was lurking in the shadows in person, dagger in hand. (COMIC: Jenny Nowhere Is Sus, She's The Impostor!)

In the 925th Universe

See main article: Jenny Somewhere (925th Universe)

A version of Jenny Somewhere existed in the 925th Universe and was present at the Dibbsy Store on December 24th, 2022 alongside Jenny Everywhere, Jenny Nowhere, Laura Drake and a few other notable individuals. (PROSE: A Very Jenny Over-There Christmas)

Other references

In 2022, Jenny Everywhere mentioned Jenny Somewhere to Lord Thymon as a fellow “adverbial person” with whom Thymon was assumed to already be familiar. Everywhere told him that Jenny Elsewhere, of whom Thymon had never heard, did indeed exist and was Somewhere's nemesis. As she said it out loud, Jenny was surprised to realise that she “didn't see her around much”. (PROSE: Family Business)

Behind the scenes

Genesis

Jenny Somewhere was introduced in 2008 in the Apple of Chaos storyline of the webcomic The Apple of Discord. There, she was simply presented as a “failed” incarnation of Jenny Everywhere who was unable to aim her shifts or tap into the mental network, but was otherwise a normal incarnation of the Shifter.

At some point before February 2013 (when Carter-Ethan Rankin ported over the information to a page for Jenny Somewhere on the Public Domain Super-Heroes Wiki), a profile was created for her under the Projects heading of the Shifter Archive. It formally introduced Somewhere as a character in her own right rather than merely an incarnation of Everywhere — naturally under a variation of the Paragraph. This retooled version of Somewhere included a new backstory (later reflected in The Disappearance of Jenny Everywhere):

Jenny Somewhere is an imperfect clone created from a tissue sample obtained from the real Jenny Everywhere, accelerated to maturity artificially in an attempt to study and perhaps harness her ‘shifting’ powers. Though, who did this and why matters little, in terms of the character herself. She does have powers similar to Jenny Everywhere, but absolutely no control over them.

The Shifter Archive

A month later, on March 10th, 2013, Rankin added another paragraph to the page, describing a potential guiding principle for Somewhere's personality; it was directly patterned after an element of the original Barbelith description of Jenny Everywhere.

Jenny prefers to get out of dangerous situations without the use of her unpredictable powers. She thrives on the thrill and always plays fair, even if it brings her close to death.

Carter-Ethan Rankin

On January 1st, 2022, Rankin decided to strike the "even if…" fragment from the above sentence, in an effort to potentially distance Somewhere's personality from the regular Jenny's.
