Sigyn was a Norse goddess, best-known for being the loyal wife of the trickster-god Loki. The version of her who existed in the Prime Universe was involved in an adventure with the Crew of the Copper-Colored Cupids in 2021.
Description
Physical appearance
The Prime Universe's version of Sigyn was “tall and thin”, though with feminine curves. Her skin and hair were white as snow, making her appear like a living statue carved out of compacted ice. She had “striking, angled black eyebrows” and gray eyes. When meeting Pythagoras-858 and Juliet-178, she wore a short pink dress made of satin as well as a golden torque around her neck. (PROSE: The Winter Quests)
Personality
Well-matched with her husband, the Prime Universe's version of Sigyn was enigmatic and calculating. Fiercely loyal to her husband, she spent centuries in the World Below to keep him company and protect him from the Wyrm, also scheming to free him. She seemed more or less amoral, caring little for what his liberation would mean for the outside world. She had a degree of arrogance, proudly proclaiming that as the Goddess of Victory, “she always got what she wanted”. (PROSE: The Winter Quests)
Powers & abilities
As a goddess, Sigyn was immortal and unaging. Using a pre-installed Rune Stone, she was able to appear out of nowhere to Pythagoras-858 and Juliet-178 to meet them. (PROSE: The Winter Quests)
Biography
In the Prime Universe
In the Prime Universe, Sigyn, Goddess of Victory, was a cunning woman in her own right, well-matched with her husband Loki, to whom she was fiercely loyal. She stayed by his side for centuries after he was imprisoned in a cavern in the World Below, collecting the venoms dripping from the maws of the Wyrm of Loki before it could hurt him. Over the centuries, the many bowls and other containers in which she kept the venom built up. By 2021, she needed to get rid of it to clear out the cavern and start over. She contrived to use this as an opportunity to attempt to free her husband by auctioning off the magical venom, in exchange for favours that would help to free Loki.
Learning of this through the Celestial Telescopes, and fearing what might happen if some of their enemies, like the Collective of the Retconning Crocodiles, acquired it instead, the Crew sent letters to Sigyn, requesting the venom for themselves. She agreed to meet representatives of the Crew (who ended up being Pythagoras-858 and Juliet-178) in a deserted forest in Finland. There, she asked that the two go on a quest to prove themselves “worthy”, giving them the task of slaying the Wyrm itself (though not telling her which wyrm she had in mind).
She greeted the Cupids in Loki's cavern when they finally made their way there, urging them to defeat the Wyrm. (PROSE: The Winter Quests)
Behind the scenes
Sigyn is a minor figure in Norse Mythology, more or less appearing only in the myth of Loki's imprisonment. Although her name etymologically means “Victorious Girlfriend”, it is not known for certain whether she was ever considered a Goddess of Victory, a title claimed by the literary Sigyn in The Winter Quests. There is also no record of her taking proactive action to free her husband, merely soothing him during his imprisonment.
