In one universe, Karolyn Carter and her brother Dwain Carter were 21st century descendants of Randolph Carter who carried on his legacy of opposing Nyarlathotep. This translated into them trying to gather all Shining Trapezohedra, of which there were at least four. Having learned that the “damn fourth Shining Trapezohedron” (as the young man put it) was in Manhattan, the siblings were on their way there when they learned thanks to the Multidimensional Finders Service that the gem was being held by Nyarlathotep himself, who was waiting for them. Changing course, they were permitted by Yog-Sothoth to take refuge in Kadath, which apparently put them beyond the reach of Nyarlathotep. (PROSE: Who Laws the Lawyers?)

Behind the scenes

In her author's comments for Who Laws the Lawyers?, Delilah H. Smith admitted that there was no particular significance to the name “Karolyn”, which had “just spr[u]ng to mind randomly” — unlike Dwain Carter's.
