Ozma, variously Queen Ozma or Princess Ozma, was the rightful ruler of the Land of Oz.

Description

Physical appearance

Ozma was typically tall and, as the ruler of Oz, wore a golden crown or circlet. (PROSE: The Crew of the Copper-Colored Cupids in Oz, A Series of Queer Events) In at least one universe, she had light hair. (PROSE: The Crew of the Copper-Colored Cupids in Oz) In at least one universe, Oshe often emitted a bright magical aura. During Pride Month, she wore “a gown comprised of the blues, whites, and pinks commonly found in the trans flag”. (PROSE: A Series of Queer Events)

Personality

Ozma was a wise and highly benevolent ruler to Oz, which she governed according to socialist principles. She was also noted to be “oddly forgiving”, notably pardoning Oscar Diggs for stealing her away as a child and selling her to Mombi after he simply apologised. Due to her experiences with a magical form of gender dysphoria, as well as her romantic relationship with Dorothy Gale, she had a strong commitment to LGBTQ issues and an abiding love for Pride Month that did not sit easy with it being hypocritically commercialised. (PROSE: A Series of Queer Events)

Powers & abilities

In some universes, Ozma was a powerful magic user, capable of travelling inside a flying, translucent bubble. (PROSE: A Series of Queer Events) At any rate, she possessed the Magic Picture, a magical framed picture capable of showing anything its owner wished. This allowed her to keep tabs on any important events in the land. (PROSE: The Crew of the Copper-Colored Cupids in Oz)

Biography

Visited by Acquaintanceship

One universe's version of Ozma, who appeared as a “tall young girl with light hair and a gold circlet”, was the ruler of her version of Oz by the time it was visited by Acquaintanceship-982. Although she ruled Oz, she used the title of “Princess” instead of Queen. She lived in the Emerald Palace with Dorothy Gale as well as many other friends and attendants, including a retinue of “royal magic-makers”. She owned the Magic Picture and a royal carriage known as the Red Wagon.

She was with the Wizard of Oz when he used magic to transform the Imps Olite, Udent and Ertinent into three metal buttons.

“Many years” later, the enchantment faded, and the Imps, returning to their true forms, escaped. They found their old master, the witch Blinkie, who had lost her powers, and, on her orders, stole Dorothy Gale's Magic Belt. To avoid discovery, Blinkie used the power of the Belt to make Ozma and the Wizard forget the imps had ever existed (though the enchantment was partially blocked by Glinda), while the Imps returned to the Palace to steal Ozma's Magic Picture and disassemble the Red Wagon, also stealing Glinda's Great Book of Records. Unsure what to do, Ozma convened a great number of her friends and acquaintances to a room on the first floor the Palace to discuss the situation, including the Wizard, Dorothy, Toto, Tik-Tok, General Omby Amby, Jellia Jamb, the Glass Cat, Trot, the Sawhorse, the Shaggy Man, the Gump, Flipper, Eureka, the Scarecrow, the Lonesome Duck, Cap'n Bill, Jack Pumpkin Head, the Hungry Tiger, the Cowardly Lion, the Tin Woodman, Billina, Ojo, the Woozy, the Woggle-Bug. Also brought to the meeting by mistake was Acquaintanceship-982, who had been mistaken for Tik-Tok by General Amby. The group decided to use Acquaintanceship-982's Fog Ship to quickly comb through the Land.

They first landed in Munchkin Country, where the possé met the Phonograph of Oz, who had spotted the imps. Thanks to the Phonograph's directions, Acquaintanceship knew to fly towards Quadling Country, but on the way through the forest which separated the two Countries, they were attacked by three kalidahs. After evading them, they reached the mountains of Jinxland, where they found not only the imps, but also Blinkie. Gloating, the Wicked Witch unveiled a field full of hundreds of imp statues, which she intended to bring to life as an unstoppable army using the Powder of Life. Acquaintanceship attempted to romanticise Blinkie right there and then, but his shot missed and instead knocked the bottle Powder out of her hands. Taking his chance, Acquaintanceship grabbed the bottle and ran off with it into his Fog Ship, but Blinkie (who had yet to realise he had the Powder and thought he was just escaping) used the Belt to cause him to crash into the forest, and transformed most of the Ozites into various objects, with only Dorothy managing to escape.

Acquaintanceship was unharmed, however, although his Ship was down. Out of other options, he used some of the Powder of Life to attempt to repair his Ship, with the effect of bringing it to life as a sentient entity. Startled, he dropped the rest of the Powder onto his bow and arrows, which similarly came to life. Together, they returned to Jinxland and managed to romanticise Blinkie and the Imps, who subsequently apologised to everyone and returned the magical items. However, the Ship's inexperience with flying itself caused it to crash again with Acquaintanceship itself, injuring him this time. With the Bow and Arrows finding them, however, the Imps worked with Tik-Tok to repair both of them. Healed, Acquaintanceship was offered the chance to stay in the Emerald Palace as a permanent resident but turned it down, unlike the Ship, Bow and Arrows, with Ozma decreeing that the Disagreeable Arrow would get a quiet room to himself. Saving Interdimensional Pride

One version of Ozma was abducted as a baby by Oscar Diggs, who wanted to take over the Land of Oz himself and wanted the rightful heir out of the way. He sold her to the witch Mombi, who transformed her into a boy to better evade suspicion. As a result, Ozma grew up as functionally trans, only later discovering her true gender and returning to living as a girl. She eventually retook the throne, and forgave the older Diggs after he apologised. (PROSE: A Series of Queer Events) At some point in her rulership of Oz, she dubbed Doctor Know-It-All “the Veritable Virtuoso of Macrology”. (PROSE: Good Crieff - The Tribulations of the Scottish Division)

By June 2022, she had grown into a tall young woman, and was in a relationship with Dorothy. She hurried to the Diggs estate when Diggs warned her that the Man in Grey was corrupting the Interdimensional Pride Council with unethical, hypocritical sponsorship deals from the likes of Dibbsy and Kablamazon. Arriving in full magical regalia, she ended up banning the Man in Grey from the Land.

A week later, Ozma and Dorothy attended the pride party organised at Professor Helvetius's Convenient Pride Decorations Shop by Jenny Over-There and Dynamite Thor, as did the “four cardinal witches” of Oz, and apparently held hands through the evening. (PROSE: A Series of Queer Events)

Behind the scenes

The trans themed dress in A Series of Queer Events alludes to Ozma's canonical childhood identity of Tip, a boy who grew up unaware of his true identity, family, and gender.
