The Temple of the Serpent God in the Naked Jungle of Buranda was an ancient stone temple topped with a huge, hollow statue of a snake, which housed a real giant snake, Nerkash.
Though presumably predating it, the Temple was used as a base by the Serpent Priest's murderous Serpent Cult around the year 2000. After the Cult was brought down by Kaza, the Priest skulked off back to the Temple to die on his throne. A decade later, his skeleton was uncovered by his daughter Nerlana and the mercenary Mitchell, who recovered the magical tiara he'd used to control Nerkash and other snakes hypnotically. She then attempted to rebuild the Serpent Cult. However, her first attempt to summon Nerkash went awry thanks to the interference of Kaza, Gwenna, the Commissioner, Wimberly, and Gana. After the snake was wounded by a gunshot from Wimberly, it lashed out and ate Nerlana before falling unconscious. It was subsequently healed and rehomed to the London Zoo while the Temple was abandoned once again. (COMIC: The Serpent Sorceress)
