Fragment: Fanfic Critique was a Jenny Everywhere short story written by Scott Sanford in 2022. It was the fifth of Sanford's “Fragments” shorts, and was also a commentary on, and sequel of sorts to, an earlier Jenny Everywhere Day short story by another author.
Contents
Plot
Jenny exchanges a few words with Kim about a story about another of her selves that she's just read through. Kim is amused, at her summary of the tale where Jenny ends up riding off with a partially-undressed girl tied to her saddle, to hear that it is “one of those stories”, needling Jenny about her pronounced longing to have a little of that kind of fun of late, and the two share some surreal banter on the subject of whether some pretty boys would be allowed as pets by the terms of their apartment lease.
Worldbuilding
Jenny Everywhere
- This story features the usual Jenny used in Scott Sanford's Jenny Everywhere stories. She reads a story about another Jenny.
Laura Drake
- Reflecting on other “fictional” stories about herself that she's read, Jenny mentions her vague confusion at the fact that “writers keep matching [her] up with tall redheads”.
Universes
- This story takes place in the “default universe” of Scott Sanford's Jenny Everywhere stories.
Other
- The apartment building is owned by a “company” with a team of lawyers. They updated the terms under which pets were allowed after an incident where Jenny brought a spherical cow to the apartment; Jenny thinks this is unfair as the animal didn't even actually belong to her.
- Thoth claims that his and Steve Lucas's apartment is in Thoth's name, and it is Steve who lives there in the quality of pet. Kim thinks he's just lying, as cats are prone to doing.
Behind the scenes
Background
When releasing the story on Dreamwidth in 2022, Scott Sanford appended some commentary to the story:
What if Jenny read what’s posted on Jenny Everywhere Day? (If you haven’t read The Showdown yet, um, maybe don’t read it at work…). Here’s a brief interlude I conceived, typed, and poorly edited within 24 hours; if you don’t like it that’s fine and I’m sure the next thing along won’t dent the fourth wall so badly. |
