Universe (This Might Happen Someday)
In one universe, fiction about Jenny Everywhere started to be published on August 13th, 2001, and persisted by the year 3001, by which points the Paragraph had become superfluous by the now long-standing end of copyright (as well as war, starvation and old age).
By then, human technology was advanced enough to allow striking body modifications for purely aesthetic reasons (such as making one's eyes pitch-black and ringed with stars), and to have, in one way or another, made old-school physical objects into something of a quaint rarity. With wars, poverty and the like long abolished, fiction started to more frequently feature different sources of narrative conflict. Many also spent their lives in controlled “adventures”, although whether these were VR or possibly actual interdimensional travel was unclear.
By 3001, this universe was home to competitive friends and roommates Jenny Evans and Jennifer Nolan. Jenny Evans was a fan of Jenny Everywhere fiction, and finished a 25-year-long endeavour of reading all surviving works of fiction featuring the character by Jenny Everywhere Day 3001. Her birthday was not on J.E.D. itself, but it was close, and Nolan decided to give her an early birthday present to mark the occasion: an old-school set of a scarf and goggles. This prompted the two to dwell on the possibility that they were essentially their reality's versions of Jenny Everywhere and Jenny Nowhere. Although neither took the notion entirely seriously, they then headed off on one of their adventures in a suspiciously Jenny-like fashion — which may or may not have been the first actual shift they undertook, rather than the customary V.R. jaunt. Behind the scenes
This universe is intended as a plausible future for our world. To help with this, multiple worldbuilding details remain ambiguous, or are given several possibilties.
