Behind the scenes
As highlighted in his author's notes by the Lyniezian, this universe is implicitly a minor alternate history for the real world, with the exact details kept unclear. It contains many anachronistic details about British culture; for example, the girls at Jenny's school are talking about reality TV shows, but the BBC is still called “the Home Service” and Jenny listens to music on “cartridges”. Zeppelins also appear to be an everyday sight. In wider geopolitical affairs, Imperial Japan still exists as a warmongering power.
