As the two girls grew, they became rivals for Junior's heart, though not to the extent of spoiling their earlier friendship; eventually, during the summer after their graduation, Junior proposed to Deena rather than Gwenna. Finding herself more grief-stricken than she'd expected, Gwenna not only left them but the city altogether, deciding to go out of town for college.
