In the middle of the night, the Odds followed the tracking device to the Queen's house, where they distracted her by cutting off her electricity. In the confusion, they stole her Shadow-Ray and, getting Professor Madison to walk them through it over video-phone, reprogrammed it to create shadow-beings loyal to them rather than the Queen. When they attacked the Queen and her shadows openly, it was with the help of the Shadow Odds, living versions of their own shadows (including a Shadow-Captain-Evening, who handily beat the Queen's warriors. After she surrendered and was taken into custody, the Captain was interviewed by Amanda Allen, explaining how they'd beaten the Queen. At Armstrong's suggestion, the Odds then took possession of the Queen's Flying Platform, which they used to chase down remaining evil shadows, returning them to normal using the Reverse-Shadow-Ray. (COMIC: Chasing Shadows)

Captured by Hexia
When the New Protectors got control of New York City's police force and announced that they would start demanding that independent superheroes swear allegiance to them, Amanda Allen hosted a “special edition” of Hero Hour, where she intended to get the thoughts of a superhero and a noted superhero-centric pundit on these news. The superhero was, naturally, none other than Captain Evening. Before the debate could get underway, however, the live broadcast was interrupted by Hexia and her henchfolk breaking into the Channel 6 studios and taking everybody hostage. An old enemy of the Captain's, she kissed him on the lips, elicting a more flustered reaction than the Captain dared to admit.

(COMIC: Season of the Witch)]]Thereafter, however, Hexia squandered her position of strength being a petty tyrant to the hostages; she had not apparently thought of a plan beyond crashing the broadcast, and began making one up as she went along, briefly voicing her intent to kidnap the entire TV crew and then force them to make her own, supervillainy-focused show instead. When the Commissioner asked her for practical demands, she defaulted to asking for a getaway helicopter. While this was being arranged, however, Merv the Griffin, the Blue Knight and Armstrong Fatbuckle, alerted to the situation by the Commissioner, made their way into the Channel 6 studios. They made short work of Hexia's henchfolks, and Hexia herself was knocked out by Amanda Allen using a wooden chair before she could use her magic to turn the tide of battle.

(COMIC: Season of the Witch)]]However, the dazed villainess did manage to slip away and get to the helicopter. Merv proved unable to fly fast enough to give chase, but the witch was soon tackled out of the vehicle, in flight, by newly-minted independent heroine Jung-La. Startled by Hexia using a vanishing spell to slip from her grasp, Jung-La lost her grip on the vine she had used to swing across from a skyscraper, only to be saved from certain death by the Captain, who had recovered his uniform and Skycicle and caught her out of the sky. While Armstrong and Merv apprehended the witch and the Commissioner took in her henchmen, the Captain spoke at greater length with Jung-La, whom he recognised as the young sheriff he'd met on his soul-searching road trip. In gratitude and recognition of her obvious talent, he offered her a place on the team, which she gladly accepted. He also complimented Merv, Armstrong and the Blue Knight for how well they'd carried on without his leadership. Their celebrations were short-lived, however, as the Commissioner pointed them to a new broadcast from the New Protectors, announcing that they would now be enforcing a curfew and treating all non-registered superheroes as criminals.
