Plot
Jenny Everywhere, after much trial and error, manages to shift back into a universe in which she once dated a man named Max Murdock. As she soon discovers, however, she has shown up several years too early. Now, she must choose between dating Max again from the start or helping him mend his relationship with his current girlfriend, thereby erasing their time together from having happened in the first place.
Worldbuilding
Jenny
- This story focuses on a version of Jenny from an unknown universe, who is tall and thin with pale skin, neck-length brown hair, and her usual scarf and goggles.
- This particular version of Jenny has never been able to shift into the same place more than once before, although she manages to do so with near-accuracy so as to reunite with Max Murdock.
- Jenny can draw on the powers, wisdom, and experiences of all of her alternate selves.
- Jenny can force other people to "jack in" to their alternate selves in other universes, or into her own memories. This appears to be distinct from actually shifting them between universes.
- Jenny can "jack in" to her own memories, reliving her experiences. She can also jump forward or backwards through her personal timeline to speak to herself in other periods of time.
- When Jenny shifts out of a universe with no native version of herself, she appears to vanish in a burst of light.
- When this version of Jenny feels that it's time for her to shift, she is incapable of resisting it and must leave the universe immediately.
- This version of Jenny generally never attempts to control her destination, and is only able to do so with great effort.
- In the future, this version of Jenny is extremely careful about preventing temporal paradoxes, refusing to give her past self advice for fear of causing one.
- This Jenny usually gets the urge to shift after she has finished helping someone.
Universes
- In one universe, in which no native version of Jenny exists, a group of friends work at the Weekly Comet, a supposed tabloid newspaper of dubious reliability that is, in reality, a cover for an organization dedicated to protecting the world's mysteries.
- In an alternate timeline created when Jenny changed the past of a universe, Jenny dated Max Murdock, an employee of the Weekly Comet.
- In one universe, Max Murdock's acquaintance Mitch Elliot is a woman.
- In one universe, Max Murdock and Andrea Campos have been married for fifteen years.
Other
- Max Murdock's friends (all of whom Jenny was familiar with in an alternate timeline) include Foster Hearst, Ito Masello, his boss Millard Detweiler, and his current girlfriend Andrea Campos. Also acquainted with Murdock is Mitch Elliot, considered a 'scumbag' by Jenny Everywhere.
- Jenny returns to Murdock's universe in 2006, but originally visited several years later in the timeline.
- Jenny reunites with Max Murdock at a jazz club called Murry's.
- When visiting the universe for the first time in what would later become an alternate timeline, Jenny constantly (but accidentally) smacked Foster Hearst in the face while gesturing. Upon her return, she does the same almost immediately.
- Jenny fears that she could create a temporal paradox by changing the past.
- A sasquatch named Phil works at the Weekly Comet, and recently dealt with relationship issues himself.
- The Weekly Comet is in possession of a disguise generator which can alter a person's appearance based on their thoughts.
- Following her departure, an article about Jenny is published in the Weekly Comet.
- In response to the statement by Doctor Adam S. Douglas of the Sirius University Philosophy Center that time travel must be impossible, Jenny noted that that was "a load of fetid dingo's kidneys."
