The Convenient Chirping Crickets were a creation of Madame Tarsa, which she intended to sell at the Interdimensional Black Market alongside “Tarsa’s Terrifically-Well-Timed Tumbleweed” as part of a “special holiday package” around Christmas 2020. The Crickets' function was presumably to chirp at dramatically-appropriate times to emphasise the emptiness of a location. (PROSE: The Time of the Toymaker)
