Safe at Home or Fernweh was an illustration and short prose piece by Laura Seabrook for Jenny Everywhere Day 2020.

Plot

After visiting a world suffering through a pandemic, this Jenny must avoid shifting for a while and quarantine away from all people for a fortnight. She spends her time socializing online via a "TESLA ELECTRIKS Farnsworth Communicator" which looks like an ordinary laptop.

Worldbuilding

Jenny Everywhere

  • This story features a version of Jenny Everywhere with stringy, shoulder-length brown hair. She wears goggles with blue rims and clear lenses, and a golden pendant resembling a compass, as well as brown shorts and a grayish-green, sleeveless shirt with a V neckline. She is not wearing a scarf, nor shoes, but this is presumably down to her just being indoors at the moment, with a rainbow-coloured selection of stars being visible on a clothing rack in the background.

Background

Fernweh is not a location, though it's easy to read it that way. Rather it’s a German word literally translating as ‘love of hiking’ but more generally meaning the enjoyment of travel. This Jenny is being responsible, staying safely at home rather than giving in to her wanderlust.
