Sergeant-Major Everywhere was native to an unnamed universe.

Description

Physical appearance

Sergeant-Major Everywhere was a "tall burly man, beady of eye and rubicund of visage." He had a blotchy face and strong teeth. (PROSE: The Great Wish Escapade)

Biography

Sergeant-Major Everywhere served time in the army in India for twenty-one years, having adventures involving "strange scenes and doughty deeds", and he participated in wars and plagues, and met unusual individuals. Everywhere received the Monkey’s Paw — a magically-imbued item which was created by a fakir to teach those who used it to grant wishes the consequences of messing with fate — after the its previous owner wished for death. Everywhere chose his three wishes, which he evidently came to regret.

Everywhere later visited Mr and Mrs White and their son in Laburnum Villa to entertain them of his tales of India. After a third drink of whiskey, Everywhere began telling his tales, and the subject of the monkey's paw — which he had on his person — was brought up when Mr White asked him about India. He told the family about the paw, and then went to discard it into the fire, but Mr White retrieved it against Everywhere's wishes. They were mostly distracted from the paw over supper, and afterwards Everywhere told them more stories about India before leaving to catch the last train of the night. (PROSE: The Great Wish Escapade)

Behind the scenes

  • As The Great Wish Escapade was an April Fools' Day story, it was a mostly-unaltered version of the public domain 1902 short story The Monkey’s Paw. As such, Sergeant-Major Everywhere was originally Sergeant-Major Morris.
    • Interestingly, this does raise the implication that Sergeant-Major Everywhere in the original story is therefore a distant incarnation of Jenny Everywhere, and that later depictions of the character in other media are also connected. This theme fits that of Everywhere's Extraordinary Escapades, given that The Great Wish Escapade is the second instalment.
