In one universe, as humanity began to expand beyond Earth into the rest of the Solar System and made contact with other species like the Martians, a Solar Union, with laws applying across the System, was instituted. Solar Union law demanded that the Altern Corporation give users disclaimers about which of their data they had the right to collect and disclose to third parties, although it did not forbid those actions themselves.
