As clarified in his author's notes by Richard Prediger, Amy Johnson “a real-life aviatrix who set a number of long distance records and was eventually killed in World War II whilst serving as an auxiliary pilot — for American readers, kind of the transatlantic equivalent of Amelia Earhart, if you will”.
