The sonic screwdriver was an item used by the Doctor as a detection tool. It resembled a “bizarre flashlight”.
History
The Eleventh Doctor of one universe used his to try and detect leftover traces of temporal energy left behind by a Weeping Angel shortly before he met Wednesday Addams. (PROSE: Wednesday and the Doctor)
A sonic screwdriver was in a chest of costume items in one version of Jenny Everywhere's room in 31 Spooner Street in one universe, as Jenny looked for a Halloween costume. (COMIC: Halloween Preparations)
