The Eighth Doctor was a version of the Doctor who existed in multiple universes.

Jenny Everywhere once noted that "some people" got into even more trouble than she did. For proof, she pointed to the Doctor’s TARDIS which, with supreme bad luck, was materialising in the middle of the very firing squad Jenny had just escaped in one universe. (COMIC: The Late Shift)

When Wednesday Addams entered the Eleventh Doctor's TARDIS in one universe, she had psychic visions of some his other selves, including one who “looked like Lord Byron”. (PROSE: Wednesday and the Doctor)

Behind the scenes

Nothing in The Late Shift explicitly identifies the version of the Doctor featured. However, the story was released during Paul McGann's tenure as the current Doctor, making it the natural assumption that he was the one featured.
