In some universes, the term of rune described a magical sigil which could hold a magical effect.

Ezri had a rune tattooed on her right cheek. Though symbolic of her status as the Marked One, chosen hero of prophecy in her home universe, its actual power was fairly minor; she used it to keep her hair black with purple ends, whereas it naturally grew blond.
