Employee Training was an extremely brief Jenny Everywhere short story written by Scott Sanford for Jenny Everywhere Day 2023, presented as an extract from the Intelligence Taskforce employee handbook, ostensibly written by Laura Drake.

Plot

A passage from the Intelligence Taskforce employee handbook written by Laura Drake is excerpted. It begins by citing the aphorism that “Nobody ever acquires all three qualities of a reasonable outlook on life, basic common sense, and the ability to turn the population of London into gerbils”, going on to explain that although defeating actively predatory incursions is of course part of the Taskforce's remit, the majority of their time is actually spent managing the well-meaning but eccentric-and-powerful, “the ones who are happy to live among the rest of the population, and merely need occasional reminders that most people do not share their peculiar views of the world”.

Worldbuilding

Laura Drake

  • The essay is attribute to L. Drake, clearly speaking from personal experience via her personal acquaintance with Jenny Cornelius, one of those selfsame all-powerful eccentrics.

Background

When posting the story, Scott Sanford appended a to-the-point foreword:

This one presupposes familiarity with the Laura Drake who works for the Intelligence Taskforce and spends time with Jenny Cornelius.
Scott Sanford

Although posted alongside Sanford's 2023 compilation of Fragments, it was not listed as one in his official table of contents, instead being listed with his other two Jenny Everywhere Day contributions for the year.
