In one universe, the Bonangi were an independent Congolese tribe ruled by Queen Gwenna, based in a village surrounded by a wooden fence.

They were skilled metal-workers, and, after coming into possession of some gold, created golden kitchenware and intricate decorative statuettes, most of which Gwenna kept for her own private enjoyment. Elder Subbi and her friend Jo-Jo the Congo King, however, both foresaw that the golden artefacts' existence would eventually attract greedy outsiders to the village. Indeed, an outlaw eventually came into possession of a golden statuette depicting Gwenna and, following its trail, came to the jungle. He allied with Ungulla, the leader of a rival tribe, and raided the village on the back of the Iron Beast, capturing Gwenna.

Though initially taken by surprise, Jo-Jo was able to rally the remaining Bonangi warriors to ambush the villains' convoy on the way back to Ungulla's village. After they emerged victorious (with the white outlaw being killed in the commotion), they captured Ungulla, and Gwenna agreed to make him face justice but show mercy to the rest of his tribe to avoid a perpetuation of their feud. She also agreed to get rid of the gold, admitting Jo-Jo was right all along. (COMIC: Jo-Jo Congo King)
