In one universe, Dorothy Gray was the youthful paid companion of the elderly, widowed New York City-based millionaire Matilda Marshall.

After Matilda became enamoured of the idea of marrying Kaza, “the Congo King”, Dorothy followed her to Africa, where he and Kaza found rather more to like about each other than Kaza could appreciate about Matilda. Matilda, however, was bitterly jealous, notably throwing a fit when the three of them were attacked by a pack of angry gorillas and Kaza went to rescue the abducted Dorothy while leaving Matilda behind, and urging Kaza to drop “that creature” to attend to her instead. Eventually, Kaza arranged for Matilda's American suitor Tom Rubio to appear to defeat him in a fistfight, which made Matilda lose her interest in Kaza and return to America with Tom while Dorothy and Kaza were free to act on their feelings. Behind the scenes

This original version of Dorothy Gray appeared in a 1949, now-public-domain comic story featuring Jo-Jo the Congo King, The Dauntless Dowager. The story was reprinted in 1954 in Fantastic Fears #8 as Fear in the Jungle, with the names of Tom Payne and Jo-Jo changed to Tom Rubio and Kaza respectively (whereas Matilda and Dorothy's names remained unchanged).
