Doyle depicted Mycroft as a unique “all-purpose government advisor”, discreetly dispensing his advice as needed to any department, high or low; later reimaginings have often moved Mycroft away from this generalised hypercompetent bureaucrat to an advisor to, or even the Victorian head of, the British secret services.
