Returning to her home, now covered in dust and cobwebs, made Elshanor feel “like Pip in Great Expectations”. (PROSE: Our Strange and Wonderful House: The Library)

Behind the scenes

Philip Pirrip, nicknamed “Pip”, is the main character of Charles Dickens's 1861 novel Great Expectations. The reference in The Library is to one of the most iconic parts of the novel, and Dickens's world at large, Pip's discovery of the cobweb-covered, years-old wedding feast in Miss Havisham's home.
