Spirits were a general term for non-corporeal, or at least non-conventionally-corporeal, beings.

When the Strange and Wonderful House began acting up out of excitement about its impending acquisition of an Elevator, a “continuous seance” had to be held by the residents on the 7th floor “to keep spirits and demons out of closets and cupboards”. (PROSE: Our Strange and Wonderful House: Elevator)

Ghosts were considered a type of spirits, hence hailing from the Spirit Realm. (PROSE: The Ghosts and the Machine, A Copper-Colored Christmas Carol) When he visited the Spirit Realm, Philatel-426 saw “souls, shades, spirits, spectres” all around him. The term Spirits could also refer to beings who had a similar nature but embodied concepts, but were not the remainder of a formerly corporeal living thing; this included the Three Spirits of Christmas Carol fame. (PROSE: A Copper-Colored Christmas Carol)
