Awakening was a Jenny Everywhere short story written by Scott Sanford in 2021 and published on his Dreamwidth blog following the completion of his serialised Jenny story Paying It Forward. It was more of a character study than a narrative, depicting Jenny's thought process during an everyday event.

Plot

Jenny Everywhere slowly wakes up in her bed in one of her terrestrial incarnations; from her subjective point of view, this is infinity reducing to one perspective, slowly regaining awareness of her senses and, little by little, remembering who she is in this particular life and what the objects around her are called.

Worldbuilding

Jenny Everywhere

  • The Jenny featured in this story is presumably the one used by Scott Sanford from PROSE: Parallax onwards as his “default” Jenny; she does, at any rate, live in an ordinary 21st century apartment. Implicit glimpses are given, however, of Jenny's memories of various other incarnations of herself, such as ones with armor or exoskeletons instead of skin, and one who “lives on a neutron star, sensing the world around [her] in a brilliant cascade of magnetic fields and electrical flows”.

Universes

  • Per the above assumption the universe in which Jenny wakes up must be the one introduced in Parallax. Implicit glimpses are given, however, of Jenny's memories of the lives of various other incarnations, such as one who sleeps on a bed of crystal.
