No Café This Time was a standalone one-page Jenny Everywhere story created in 2003 by an artist who signed as "Ced", possibly in collaboration with other artists, for the Monthly Montreal Comix Jam.[1][2] The story was untitled, but is commonly referred to as No Café This Time, a line taken from the final panel of the comic.

Barring the discovery of earlier stories matching the criteria, it may be the first story starring Jenny to have been released in a print medium - although COMIC: Six Strings, a non-Jenny-centric story which was released a year earlier and may have featured a cameo appearance by Jenny (but which didn't star her), may be the earliest print story to feature Jenny in any role.

Plot

Drinking coffee with a friend, Jenny receives a transmission from an unknown individual informing her that the universe needs her help immediately. Jenny, morose, declares that she simply doesn't feel like it anymore. Her friend asks if "he" has contacted her again, and Jenny denies that he has, suggesting, instead, that they should have another drink - but not coffee this time.

Worldbuilding

Jenny

  • This story features an incarnation of Jenny with short, dark hair, who wears the traditional goggles and scarf alongside a pair of small, black earrings.
  • This story's incarnation of Jenny appears to be in contact with an unseen man who seems to relay assignments to her (or, perhaps, to simply contact her when the universe is in need of saving).

Universes

  • This story takes place in a nondescript house or establishment of some sort in one universe, which is, apparently, in urgent need of saving.

Behind the scenes

The cover of the issue of The Monthly Montreal Comix Jam Quarterly in which the comic was printed.

The story was created during one of the Monthly Montreal Comix Jam events hosted by Salgood Sam in 2003[1], and was printed in a quarterly collection of curated comics from several of the year's Jams, The Monthly Montreal Comix Jam Quarterly 2003 Vol. 5. [1][2]

Comics created during the Comix Jam events were intended to be passed around to multiple artists, each of them adding to the story and signing their name on their contribution.[1] No Café This Time features only one signature, reading "Ced" and appearing on multiple panels, and it is therefore unclear whether the comic was created by a single artist or if any other artists contributed to the comic without signing.

Read online

The story was originally released in The Monthly Montreal Comix Jam 2003 Vol. 5, a physical collection which was available for purchase for CAD$4.00 at Montreal Comix Jam events in 2003[1][3], as well as by mail order through the Montreal Comics Collective's section of the Grenadine Records website[3]. A scan of the comic was uploaded to the personal blog of Steven Wintle on March 24, 2009, where it was given its common title, No Café This Time.[2] As this is now offline, we reproduce the story's single page below.

Several back-issues of the Monthly Montreal Comix Jam collections, including the quarterly in which No Café This Time was printed, have been digitally scanned by Salgood Sam and are currently available for purchase as PDFs for CAD$1.00 on Gumroad.[1]
