Nihilist was one of the non-copyrighted entities whom the Man in Grey allowed on the list of possible candidates to join the Multidimensional Finders Service until Jenny Over-There pointed out to him that, as a malevolent entity resembling “a skull floating on a dust cloud”, it had little to “bring to the job of finding things”. (PROSE: Open Sourcing)
Behind the scenes
“The Nihilist” was created by Dustin Smith in 2015 as an open-source character. It had its own variant of the Paragraph:
The character of The Nihilist is available for use by anyone, with only one condition. This paragraph must be included in any publication involving The Nihilist, in order that others may use this property as they wish. All rights reversed. |
—Dustin Smith |
The character was depicted an ancient, psychic vampire which had wiped out all life in its home dimension (designated NS-482), and was brought to an inhabited Earth by a group of scientists studying multiversal travel. It was so old that it had decayed into dust, with the skull as its only remaining physical element.
