Poltergeists were a type of spirit.
Nature
In the Prime Universe, they were a type of spirit distinct from ghosts. Like ghosts, but unlike other types of spirits such as wraiths, banshees, ghouls and goblins, they were non-corporeal. (PROSE: The Ghosts and the Machine)
History
At some point prior to their tangle with the “Tenth Lord Grell”, Jenny Cornelius and Laura Drake visited their universe's Oxford and met real poltergeists as they interacted with the Poltergeist Society of Oxford. (PROSE: Birds and Snakes)
On Halloween 2019, one of the guests to the Interdimensional Tavern smuggled a poltergeist to the party. It got loose and quickly wreaked havoc in the kitchen, but this was largely ignored amidst the excitement of the party. On that same date, the Crew of the Copper-Colored Cupids and Madame Tarsa faced and ultimately defeated the Great Ghost's legion, which had escaped from the Spirit Realm and included poltergeists among many other spirits. (PROSE: The Ghosts and the Machine)
