Somewhere was the first Jenny Everywhere short story published on Ficly by Jeanne Morningstar, who described their process of writing the story as: “I originally tried to write this as a much longer story which just wasn’t working. When I found the Jenny Everywhere ficlets, I was inspired to distill it down to its core”. It sees Jenny ponder her relationship(s) to an as-yet-unnamed romantic partner.
Contents
Plot
Jenny Everywhere regards an unnamed romantic partner and their parallel experiences with various Jennies under different circumstances. It is written in the first person, from the perspective of several Jennies.
Worldbuilding
Universes/Jenny Everywhere/Laura Drake
- In one universe, Jenny shows the love interest her shifting for the first time, taking her to another, apparently quite pleasant world.
- In a third universe, Jenny Everywhere and her love have founded a family. They have at least two daughters.
- In yet another universe, Jenny has lost her love to another woman. Jenny forces herself to be happy for her, despite her grief.
- In yet another universe, Jenny's love was doomed as its object had become a world-threatening villain.
- In the final universe of the story, and the one which seems to be the “primary” one of the story, Jenny is meeting her love interest for the first time at a party. She is aware of her other selves and their aforementioned various experiences with the love interest, but tries to put them out of her mind.
Continuity
- The idea of this fractured love story would slowly be elaborated upon by Morningstar, eventually leading to the proper debut of Laura Drake in PROSE: The First Voyage. The story is most similar to the first vignette of Somewhere, with Jenny showing Laura another world for the first time and Laura being incredulous at the idea that Jenny's shifting abilities, which she's always talked about, might actually be real. However, the two accounts differ, with the love interest in Somewhere being delighted by what they witness while Laura takes a little longer to adapt.
