The Third Universe was a universe whose timeline was travelled through by the Doctor and the TARDIS.

The Universe was plagued by "unfathomably baffling paradoxes" due to being constantly rewritten by "careless" time travellers. It gained a reputation among multiversal hitchhikers, with at least one Jenny Everywhere being hesitant on even shifting into the Universe. (PROSE: A World of Pure Unimagination)

History

It had an apparently native version of the Shifter, who had fair hair and Asian features, and was distinguished by her tiger-stripes-patterned jacket. Another Jenny, having shifted into her body, once faced a firing squad in the middle of a burning, wartorn city. She escaped by shifting physically away, while also shifting her consciousness to a different Jenny, presumably leaving the native Jenny back in control of herself wherever she'd ended up. Moments after Jenny had dematerialised, the TARDIS materialised in front of the firing squad. (COMIC: The Late Shift)

At some point, a Jenny travelled up and down the Doctor's timelines. She first met the Fourth Doctor, nabbing his scarf, before bumping into the Seventh Doctor and Ace on an alien planet, quickly befriending the later. She finally visited the Twelfth Doctor and Clara Oswald, keeping out of sight but graffitiing “Ace Rules OK!” on the doors of the TARDIS. (PROSE: Ace Rules OK!, Photo shoot)

A time- and dimension-traveller from the Third Universe, whose name was redacted, was monitored by the Crew of the Copper-Colored Cupids as a neutral party who could potentially pose a Hyper-class threat to them. (PROSE: The Case Against Conspiracy) Their universe was involved in the Rifts Crisis, with Pythagoras-858 and Jenny Everywhere discovering that, in a bowtie-wearing incarnation, he had apparently solved one of the Rifts epidemic's possible starting points, within his own universe. (PROSE: The Grand Multiverse Hotel)

Century Smith and Briar were familiar with a “nasty lot” of warmongering cyborgs from the Third Universe, who were among the species competing for the title of Supreme Cyborg in December 2021, together with the Detraxxi, the Mecharons, the Mechamites and the Electrons, among others. (PROSE: The Winter Quests)

The Third Universe was also affected by the Unravel in "unusually troublesome" ways. A foreign Jenny Everywhere shifted into the Universe to help mitigate the damage, travelling to a snowy planet and rescuing two Pinguis, Bibendum and Puff Tremayne. After leaving the Universe, Jenny speculated that the native Jenny she had shifted into — Achron Everywhere — was also affected by the Unravel. (PROSE: A World of Pure Unimagination)

At some point, one Jenny Everywhere visited a "place" in the universe (PROSE: Jenny Everywhere's Twitter) and got a UNIT ID with clearance level 1. (PROSE: Jenny Everywhere's UNIT ID) After some "weird shit" occurred and "sand(?)" appeared, Jenny shifted out of the universe. She later posted about this to Twitter. (PROSE: Jenny Everywhere's Twitter)

Sometime after April Fool's Day 2024, Xavier Llewellyn read about a fictionalised version of the Third Universe in Arcbeatle Press' anthology The Noodle Incident. Furthermore, their universe wasn't the Third Universe. (PROSE: The Non-Canonical, Unlicensed and Non-Valid Sequel to Arcbeatle Press’(s) April Fool's Anthology “The Noodle Incident”, 2024: 2 Noodle, 2 Furious 2, The Electric Boogaloo, feat. the Piscons, Jenny Everywhere and the People’ Republic of China)

Behind the scenes

The Third Universe is one of the names given to the native universe of the Doctor in the Doctor Who franchise and its spin-offs (which had significant influence on the creation of "the Shifter"). Additionally, a number of other works of fiction have been shown to depict real events in this universe, including some anterior to Doctor Who's 1963 debut, such as H.G. Wells's War of the Worlds or Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes short story.

The DWU's "other Jenny" as seen in COMIC: Four Doctors.

Interestingly, in 2008, a new character was introduced to the series: the artificially-created daughter of the Doctor, known only as Jenny. This Jenny (played by Georgia Tennant), who ended her debut episode by becoming a traveller in time and space in her own right, separate from her father, was characterised as a cheerful adventurer with a ready smile. It has thus obviously been theorised by some fans that Jenny, the Doctor's Daughter, may eventually come into her own as an incarnation of Jenny Everywhere. Although she does not quite resemble the unofficial "DWU Jenny" depicted in COMIC: The Late Shift, it is widely speculated that the "Doctor's Daughter" Jenny may be capable of regeneration, which could allow for a change in appearance.

It is not clear if the “nasty lot” of Cyborgs from the Third Universe mentioned in The Winter Quests should be understood as the Cybermen or as the Cyberons.

While A World of Pure Unimagination seemingly introduces a new native Jenny of the Third Universe, dialogue implies that the original native Jenny was rewritten by the Unravel.

Notes and references

  1. First appearance in directly Jenny-related media; actual debut was in 1963's An Unearthly Child.
