}}In [[Universe A (Preludes and Distractions)|one universe]], a '''version of [[Laura Drake]]''' was a friend of a young [[Jenny Everywhere A (Preludes and Distractions)|Jenny Everywhere]], having grown up with her. 

Throughout their shared high school years, Jenny tried to tell her about her nature as “the Shifter”, but Laura never believed her, though she took to playing along to humour Jenny. This changed one night at a party, by a time when they were both of age. 

While Laura had taken refuge in a bathroom, wishing the interminable party would end so she and Jenny could go back home and rest, a drunken Jenny stumbled in and tried once more to tell Laura about her other selves. When Laura seemed skeptical, Jenny decided to prove herself by [[shift]]ing both herself and Laura, for just a few moments, to [[Universe B (The First Voyage)|a universe]] with two moons. == Behind the scenes ==
This version of Laura is notable as the first explicit Laura to have been introduced, although the nameless “you” of [[PROSE]]: ''[[Somewhere (short story)|Somewhere]]'' was evidently a prototypal Laura. Indeed, one of the snippets in ''Somewhere'' resembles — though it does not quite match — the events told at greater length in ''[[The First Voyage (short story)|The First Voyage]]''.
