The device resembled a small, flat silver box which Jenny could hold in the palm of a hand. It could get damaged and need repairs. She once replaced some key components with replacements worth 20 cents; she still managed to shift with the "repaired" device, but it caused arbitrary shifts in appearance in herself and those around her a few moments after she landed. [[Meridien]] observed that this was unsurprising when dealing with a “pair-of-dimes shift” machine.
